The main objective of the 2026 call titled “New Ecosystems: Biodiversity, Socio-Ecological Consequences and Future Trajectories – BiodivFuture” launched under the Horizon Europe European Partnership on Biodiversity (BiodivERsA+) is to fund high-quality, innovative international research that possesses the potential for societal and policy impact and significantly advances our understanding of new ecosystems through holistic, systemic, and integrated approaches.
The call encompasses research into the causes, impacts, and consequences of current and future changes across all regions of the world and in all relevant domains (terrestrial, freshwater, marine, and coastal areas). The research priorities within the scope of the call are structured around three themes that are not independent of one another:
Theme A–Functioning of New Ecosystems: Under this theme, projects should focus on understanding the functioning of novel ecosystems and their connections to socio-cultural and socio-economic dynamics, as well as on identifying mechanisms and developing approaches that can facilitate biodiversity gains.
Theme B–Pathways to New Ecosystems: Under this theme, projects should focus on examining robust, plausible, and concrete pathways toward new ecosystems—and their associated socio-ecological dynamics—that can successfully persist amidst temporal mismatches and conditions of uncertainty.
Theme C–Biodiversity Benefits in the Context of New Ecosystems: This theme should focus on examining the equitable sharing of biodiversity benefits—in terms of new ecosystems—supported by inclusive, collaborative, and investment-oriented pathways toward a nature-friendly socio-ecological transformation.
Joint project proposals to be prepared under this call must comply with the international call application requirements. The international consortium submitting a project must consist of at least three partners from at least three different countries participating in the call, with each partner receiving funding from their respective national funding agency. Detailed information regarding the call is available under the “Call” tab on the BiodivERsA+ homepage
In addition to the international project proposals submitted to the call secretariat, researchers from Turkey participating in the projects are also required to submit a national project application to TÜBİTAK. Project proposals submitted from Turkey under this call will be supported within the scope of the “TÜBİTAK 1071 Support Program for Increasing the Capacity to Benefit from International Research Funds and Participation in International R&D Collaborations.” As failure to comply with the application rules may result in the application being returned without evaluation, it is essential to review the national application rules in detail prior to submission.
