Founded in 1964 by leading scientists in life sciences across Europe, the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) promotes research through various programmes. In 1969, with the involvement of 24 countries, the European Molecular Biology Conference (EMBC) was established, allowing EMBO to provide fellowships, research grants, young scientist support, courses, workshops, conferences, initiatives for women in science, scientific publications, and outreach events worldwide.
With an annual budget of around €30 million, EMBC is recognized as a model for international scientific support programmes due to its global impact, efficiency, and reputation.
Researchers using molecular biology techniques in basic sciences and medicine are encouraged to benefit from EMBO/EMBC programmes, which will not only strengthen the scientific infrastructure in their countries but also enhance international competitiveness in life sciences.
Funded by EMBC member states, EMBO offers numerous fellowships and grant programmes for researchers and students in life sciences. It also supports the organization of courses and workshops, promotes international mobility, and accepts applications from researchers worldwide, although most activities are hosted in EMBC member countries.
1. EMBO Installation Grants:
Aimed at strengthening life sciences in countries like Türkiye, Poland, Croatia, Estonia, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Montenegro, and Luxembourg, this program supports researchers returning to set up their own labs.
Funding: €50,000 annually for 3–5 years
Eligibility: Excellent publication record, minimum of two years abroad, and limited prior residence in the host country.
Deadline: April 15 annually
2. Young Investigator Programme:
Supports early-career researchers for four years. Requirements include at least two years of postdoctoral experience, a strong research background, and publications as senior author.
Benefits: Financial support for meetings, networking with EMBO members, publication opportunities, and international promotion.
Deadline: April 1 annually
EMBO, comprising of over 2,000 members, including 92 Nobel laureates, acts as a scientific academy influencing European science policy. Membership is awarded for life through peer nomination and voting.
